This chapter examines the influence of University of Chicago president Robert Maynard Hutchins on the reform of business schools in North America. It outlines the reforms Hutchins made at his university and discusses his opinion that higher education should be grounded in fundamental scholarly knowledge and that discipline-based education created barriers to the exciting intellectual opportunities found in interdisciplinary work. This chapter suggests that the leading business school reformers in the 1950s saw an opportunity to restructure management education to make it consistent with Hutchins's perspective and they became committed to fundamental knowledge and interdisciplinarity as essential elements in a reformed business school.
