The authors interviewed 22 leading CEOs who explained why ethical leadership is crucial to business, what conduct is most important, and who provided examples of both scandalous and exemplary conduct. Based on these interviews and the author’s own experience as a European corporate director and an American academic, they connect these interviews to a theory of ethical leadership that makes for dynamic businesses. They conclude with 12 concrete actions businesses can take to engage ethical leadership with a central theme that business ethics has its greatest economic payoff when sincerely embracing ethics as a good independent of its instrumental payoff.Less
