Industry, Commerce, and Communications

(p.79) 3 Industry, Commerce, and Communications
Frontier Goiás, 1822–1889
Stanford University Press

This chapter examines the history of commerce and industry in Goiás, Brazil, highlights the failed development of basic industries such as textiles and iron production, and describes the structure and operation of commerce. It suggests that the failure of these industries may be attributed to the lack of a good transportation infrastructure. The chapter explains that the bridges and roads in Goiás are barely passable, a situation which is often aggravated by the annual rains.

Keywords:   commerce, industry, Goiás, Brazil, textiles, iron production, transportation infrastructure, roads, bridges
