This introductory chapter discusses the theme of this volume which is about the crisis of democratic representation in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. It explains the concept of the crisis of democratic representation and its manifestations and highlights the intellectual and political importance of studying the crisis of democratic representation in the Andes.
