This chapter takes a look at the life histories of two women (Luisa and Pia) that help show the range of gender proficiency in Parma. It addresses the difficulty associated with resisting certain features of partnerships and marriages of women, all of whom have different ideological views. This chapter forwards the possibility that the shame (vergogna) some women go through is created by the connection of the local, state, and Catholic standards of family and household and the feminist understanding of gender.
