This chapter discusses NASCAR, and in particular how it arranges stock car racing competition. NASCAR and the sport that it caters to is shown to be the fastest-growing sport in America, and this chapter tries to explain why the independence of NASCAR from all the racing teams that are involved in this sport has been one of the main factors in its success. It further shows how NASCAR's experience can be used to support the argument that sports succeed better if the competition is controlled by an entity that is separate from and independent of the people who are participating in that competition. The discussion also touches on the concepts of contest theory, the tasks of competition organizers, and the conflict of interest between the organizer and the clubs. The chapter includes sections on NASCAR's origin as an independent organizer of stock car racing competitions in the country, an area where the structure of NASCAR separates from the model presented in this book. It also sets out several cautions about NASCAR and the reasons why these should not discourage the claim that other primary sports leagues should be organized (and reorganized) using an independent and separate competition organizer.
