This chapter turns to the Eastern Front, where Hungarian and Romanian soldiers fought together against the Soviets. What did soldiers and statesmen feel they were fighting for there? The answer is an odd one that explodes the image of wartime Europe as a continent locked in an ideological battle between Fascists and Communists, genocidal maniacs and well-meaning liberal democrats.
