This chapter examines the impact of the Iraq War on the international standing of the United States. It explains that the international political costs of the war are inextricably bound up with the political costs of the George W. Bush administration's foreign policy approaches and cites the result of a survey which reveals that the United States has lost favor in much of the world after the war. The chapter also considers future challenges facing a multilaterally challenged United States under the new administration of President Barack Obama and outlines a number of steps that could help mend Washington's threadbare reputation.
