This chapter sums up the key findings of this study on the influence of the secret police on literature and film in the Soviet Union, explaining that the artists presented in the book sometimes subvert and sometimes participate in the constant reforging of police aesthetics, but more often prefigure, expose, mock, echo, and refract it. It highlights the influence of the secret police on major literary works, including Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita, which parodies a personal file, and Viktor Shklovsky's Sentimental Journey, which echoes a trial deposition.
