This chapter discusses events in Lithuania between October 1939 and June 1940. These include the arrival of the Red Army on 19 September 1939, who were received by the Jews as the city's saviors from the Germans; the arrival of Zionist youth movement leaders from Poland; Kover's first meeting with Vitka Kempner, who later became his life companion; and Kovner's criticisms against the Hashomer Hatzair refugee center in Vilna.
