The Establishment and Training of the Underground

The Establishment and Training of the Underground

“A man cannot be a hero at the expense of those he loves” January 1942-Spring 1943

(p.76) Six The Establishment and Training of the Underground
The Fall of a Sparrow

This chapter discusses Kovner's devotion to preparations for self-defense and a ghetto underground. The underground's members prepared for the day they would confront the Germans, when the unavoidable end came for the ghetto; on the other hand, most of the ghetto inhabitants lived from day to day in the hope that the war would end while they were still alive, feeling there was no need to force the issue because, in any event, the end seemed so close.
