Waking Up to Race with Imus in the Morning
Waking Up to Race with Imus in the Morning
This chapter talks about the Imus incident, which is the perfect example of the media dynamics that give people “racial remarks.” It is show that such media coverage is also shaped by public figures' political calculations and advertisers and broadcast executives' marketing decisions. It illustrates how the technology of video capture and posting has made it easy to circulate, consume, and criticize Imus's words. The discussion of the scandal surrounding Imus has further revealed the Americans' cultural process that helps them decide what counts as racial and estimates the place of race within the public sphere. It is in this chapter where “national conversation” is further explored.
