In this chapter, Jacqueline Shohet Kahanoff documents the challenges faced by a bourgeois Jewish family from Egypt in trying to adapt to a more austere life in Israel during the mid-1950s, and also offers a glimpse into the lives of recent immigrants, including Jews, in the early years of Israel's existence. The chapter appeared in 1957 in the American Israel Review, a publication of the American Jewish League for Israel.
