In this chapter, published in 1959, Jacqueline Shohet Kahanoff describes Levantinism as a social model that must be applied within the Israeli context. By 1959, the terms “Levantine” and “Levantinization” were viewed as an attempt to integrate the cultures of the Middle East into Israeli society. Jacqueline attempts to turn these concepts into positive ones, and argues that Israel's treatment of immigrant Jews from the Arab and Islamic worlds is similar to the treatment of a colonized people.
