This short story by Jacqueline Shohet Kahanoff depicts both the lost past of Jewish life in Egypt and the realities of contemporary Israel. Set in the years between the 1967 and 1973 Arab–Israeli wars, it focuses on a middle-aged Jewish woman who is battling cancer. During a recuperative visit to Israel, the woman, born in Alexandria and living in Italy, encounters a young Israeli pilot with whom she begins an unlikely romance. Their love story develops against the backdrop of Israel's military victories in 1967 that thrust it into the Levant.
