The Semiotics of the “jewish” Body

(p.88) Four The Semiotics of the “jewish” Body
The Jewish Persona in the European Imagination
Stanford University Press

This chapter examines the depiction of the “Jewish” body in European literature. It suggests that modern writers constructed the “Jewish” body based on the traditional satanic corporeal traits put at their disposal by the generative model of “the Jews.” The chapter describes how English, German, French, and other European writers depicted the specific body parts of the Jews, including the hair, nose, odor, mouth and speech, and foot and gait. It also highlights the common representation of the male of “the Jews” as being old or indefinite because of their conceptualization as a parent figure in Christian theology and myth.
