Small Towns and Giant Hells
The Politics of Abandon in Rural Ayacucho, 1895–1919
This chapter examines the history of the politics of abandon in the small towns of Ayacucho, Peru, during the period from 1859 to 1919. It explains that the campesinos of Luricocha faced violent exclusion from national politics and the people of Carhuanca endured a political life defined largely by disenfranchisement and abuse. It suggests that this experience of abuse was not sanctioned by a larger alliance between national and regional elites but instead was fostered by a situation of political neglect and that the repercussions of that abuse stretched across the twentieth century, culminating in the violence of the Shining Path war.
