Chapter One explores the rich contradictions between claims of knowledge and assertions of feeling in eighteenth-century philosophical debates about sympathy. Analysis of the writings of Shaftesbury, Francis Hutcheson, Bernard Mandeville and David Hume demonstrates how unresolved epistemological concerns destabilize sentimentalist confidence in the possibility of shared experience.
